The Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC), in close partnership with Sesame Workshop India (SWI) implemented a 12-month program which primarily aimed at improving specific pre-literacy indicators of children in select districts of Uttarakhand. The program titled "Improving the quality of Early Childhood Development in ICDS Uttarakhand" strived to target 6000 Anganwadi centres (AWCs) across the state.
As part of this program, a 15-month pilot project across the five districts of Uttarakhand (Dehradun, Haridwar, Uddham Singh Nagar, Tehri-Garhwal and Nainital) was implemented by SWI, in consultation with the Government of Uttarakhand (GoUK) and IDFC, impacting the lives of 1,50,000 children and an equal number of caregivers.
As part of this pilot programme, SWI in association with New Concept Information Systems Pvt Ltd (NCIS) conducted a formative research across two districts (Haridwar and Nainital) of Uttarakhand during Oct-Dec 2013 . The research aimed at assessing the responses of children (3 to 5 years old) to the GGSS materials in terms of engagement, appeal and comprehension; understand AWW, supervisors' and parents' responses to GGSS materials with respect to ease of use, relevance, and appropriateness for children.
The findings indicate that majority of the AWWs, supervisors and parents found GGSS materials innovative, interesting and appealing for the children. Most of them also agreed that training was important for them to use the materials more effectively with the children. The colorful images, illustrations and attractive design were important factors which made the GGSS materials appealing for the children.
