One of the major objectives of the Planning Commission is innovation of solutions for planning in the country as well as ensuring that these innovations are exchanged amongst the entire community of development practitioners across the country. In order to achieve this objective, Planning Commission and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) commissioned PRAYAS to prepare a Compendium of Good Practices adopted by the State Governments.

It is essential that core public services are provided to all sections of the population if India has to meet its national goals. If service delivery is not improved for the same, innovative implementation of the programmes is not going to be easy.

This Resource Book, based on inputs provided by experts, is a compilation of 34 case studies pan India that showcase the practices that have played a vital role in delivery of services. The publication aims to identify and express core issues and challenges in the effective implementation and delivery of public services. The Resource Book covers diverse themes relating to health, rural development, public distribution, water and sanitation, education, disaster management etc. By demonstrating that the participation of people and communities is essential for the success of the programme, the case studies in this compilation illustrate the gap between the government and the people and how it can be bridged.

This Resource Book aims to be a useful resource for all levels of the Government, administrators, development practitioners and researchers.
